Our Preschool Day...

begins with Morning Meeting which is the centerpiece of our day.  It provides an opportunity to practice greetings, conversation, sharing (of work, feelings or life experience) and problem-solving.  We dance, sing, chant, and sign together around a shared cultural or seasonal theme.

"As a result of Erica's integrating sign language into her music program, my daughter can easily show me one hundred signs."  Brian S., parent

We are looking to build a classroom community and an excitement about learning.

"Children delight in Erica's sense of humor, which helps to establish a happy and comfortable learning environment"  Melissa H., teacher

Each child is both challenged and supported at The Schoolhouse, according to his or her individual needs.

"I want to thank you for the special attention you give my child, but I know that you give it to all the children - that is what I find amazing!"  Rob L., parent

"No child could hope to feel more valued than mine did in your classroom." parent

After Morning Meeting, the children move on to areas of interest in the classroom.  Caring is modeled and practiced throughout our day.

"Erica's multi-sensory and multi-disciplinary approach is outstanding.  In one lesson she included development and reinforcement of skills in math, language, music, reading, and art." David H., principal of Newfane School, Vermont

A nutritious snack is provided by The Schoolhouse and often prepared by the children. We "dine" together, followed by "Library" time
where the children select books from our revolving collection and read alone or with others, after which, a story is read to them.

Often, the literature selection is a prelude to an arts, science, or language arts project.  The children learn how to use art and learning materials, and how to use art as a means of self-expression.

"You are dedicated to not just literature, but student interaction with it.  That is a great thing."
Barbara Pearson, Moderator at the Professional Development Institute

Our day ends with outdoor play in the garden, or, when the weather is inclement, games/gross motor activities inside.

"It is true that walking into your classroom immediately tells any visitor that this is a place where good things are happening for children!"  Tina S., Language Arts Coordinator, WCSU

"We feel so blessed to have shared this year with you.  Your sensitivity, thoughtfulness, and gentle confidence have benefited us all.  And for Olivia - she has had such a wonderful experience with you - her beloved 'teacher-friend'.  She will build on this for years to come."  Mary Goings, parent, Portland, Maine
